What Effect Does a Warm Bath Have on Blood Circulation?

After taking a warm bath, you may feel lighter and more relaxed. One reason for this may be that warm water can temporarily increase blood flow. When you sit or bathe in warm water, the heat can cause your blood vessels to widen slightly. This may increase blood flow, especially to the skin and surrounding tissues. As a result your skin may feel warm or appear slightly red for a while after a warm bath.

This increased blood flow may also help your muscles relax. That is why many people prefer to take a warm bath after a long day at work, a lot of walking or a workout, especially when they experience muscle tightness or stiffness. Warm water can help relax the muscles, while increased blood flow may support the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles.

However a warm bath should not be considered a medical treatment for blood circulation disorders. The increase in blood flow is generally temporary. Keep in mind that the water should not be too hot and avoid staying in the bath for too long. Very hot water may cause dizziness, weakness or discomfort in some people.

Simply put a warm bath warms the body and can cause the blood vessels to widen slightly. This may temporarily increase blood flow and help the muscles feel more relaxed.

What Does Medical Research Say About Warm Baths and Blood Circulation?

The effects of warm-water immersion on blood circulation are not based solely on general assumptions. Researchers have conducted several studies to understand how heat exposure affects the body’s blood vessels, blood flow, and cardiovascular function.

1. A 2016 Study Observed Improvements in Blood Vessel Function

In 2016, researchers from the University of Oregon in the USA studied the effects of repeated hot-water immersion in young, sedentary adults over an 8-week period. Participants were immersed in water at around 40.5°C for about 60 minutes during the study period. At the end of the study, researchers observed improved blood-vessel dilation, reduced arterial stiffness, and lower blood pressure.

2. Another 2016 Study Focused on Small Blood Vessels

Another study from the same research group included 18 healthy, sedentary participants. After 8 weeks of heat therapy, researchers observed improved function of the small blood vessels in the skin. Nitric oxide–mediated vasodilation also appeared to play a role in these changes. In simple terms, repeated heat exposure may improve the body’s ability to widen blood vessels.

3. One Study Found Increased Blood Flow During Hot-Water Immersion

In a separate study, researchers measured blood flow and cardiovascular responses during hot-water immersion. While participants were in the hot water, peripheral vascular resistance decreased and heart rate increased. This suggests that the cardiovascular system responds to heat by adjusting blood flow and circulation.

4. A 2021 Review Examined Multiple Studies

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2021 examined the results of 15 studies. Researchers found small reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, along with improvements in flow-mediated dilation, after heat therapy. However, the researchers also noted that the certainty of the evidence was low for some outcomes. Therefore, heat therapy cannot yet be considered an established medical treatment.

What Can We Understand From the Research?

Taken together, these studies suggest that heat exposure can promote blood-vessel dilation and temporarily increase blood flow. Regular heat exposure has also been associated with changes in vascular function and blood pressure. However, it is important to note that the hot-water immersion protocols used in research may differ from a typical warm bath taken at home. Therefore, a warm bath should not be considered a treatment for a blood circulation disorder.
